John Giles is bemused by the lack of trust in Wes Hoolahan on Ireland duty

John Giles feels Wes Hoolahan is not being trusted enough for Ireland.

The midfielder is widely regarded as the national team's most creative force and set up the opening goal in the World Cup qualifier against Moldova, but did not start against Georgia three days earlier.

Prior to the Martin O'Neill era, Hoolahan remained firmly on the fringes during Giovanni Trapattoni's reign.

John is a fan of what Hoolahan provides and believes the 34-year-old Norwich man should be a regular on the team sheet for Ireland and doesn't think it's a risk to have in the XI.

"We're going back 6-7 years with Wes Hoolahan when he wasn't 34 and Trapattoni didn't trust him and I don't think Martin O'Neill trusts him. There have been certain insinuations like 'well, he can't play away from home and he's not going to last the 90 minutes'. But even if he's not going to last the 90 minutes, why can't he play for 60 or 70 minutes and get the best from him," said John, adding that "there seems to be no trust in Hoolahan" despite what he can provide as a creative force.

"I don't see any reason why he can't play for the 90 minutes. I honestly can't. And this has been going on for years. He's 34 now but six years ago he wasn't 34. But I think it's a matter of trust. I think a lot of people are suspicious of creative players."

John also touched on England and Liverpool midfielder and captain Jordan Henderson.

"He behaves like a leader but he doesn't play like a leader. He doesn't get on the ball," said John.
