John Giles breaks down Klopp remarks about Liverpool's defending

"That we concede like this, that makes me really, really sick."

It was clear from Jurgen Klopp's post-match comments after the League Cup defeat to Leicester City that he recognises the defensive problems that Liverpool are currently experiencing this season - and for a couple of years at least.

And he went into further detail about the two defensive lapses that cost them: "We should have scored three but as long as you leave games open, you have to defend. We always have to defend these situations better. The second ball after the corner, it’s close but it’s not offside. So we need to make it more clear that it’s offside. The only thing you can do is to push up – we didn’t. With the second one it is a throw-in again. Everyone can imagine we know how to defend them but obviously we don’t do it, because always somebody else is doing it."

John Giles joined us as always on a Thursday and the more detailed explanation by Klopp had already caught his eye.

"When you read those comments from what I can read there is that he's passing the blame onto the players and the last thing a manager should do is that because he's been there for 18 months," said John.

"He's responsible for how they defend the way they should defend and I think when the players read that, they'll say, 'What's happening here? He's not taking any of the blame and we're taking all the blame'. This is the first time he's done that. People like myself and you can criticise the defending but the manager shouldn't be getting on to about his own players."

Digging deeper into Klopp's comments on how to defend certain situations, John also feels "I think it actually shows up his lack of knowledge, in my opinion, of how to defend because he's talking about the second ball when the ball's half cleared. It should be common sense that you have to wait until the ball is cleared. But he's not."
