Keith Wood feels rugby's laws could do with a "little bit of a revamp".

The ex-Ireland captain was speaking on Off The Ball on the day that England captain Dylan Hartley was banned for six weeks after a dangerous hit on Ireland and Leinster's Sean O'Brien while on club duty with Northampton in the Champions Cup.

Keith had expected that a ban of six to eight weeks would be the eventuality for a player that has already incurred 54 weeks worth of bans during his career.

"I was asked earlier on today what did I think he was going to get and I said six to eight weeks," said Keith.

"It was a nasty blow. There's no way around it. It can't be in the game. But I would have said six to eight weeks."

On the incident itself which resulted in the red card for Hartley, the former Ireland captain turned to the issue of the laws of the game vis a vis the citing commissioners.

"We're having to visit the laws of the game far more often than we were used to in terms of dealing with it because of all the cameras and because of the zero tolerance that is trying to get into the game.

"And it just looks like the laws need a little bit of a revamp. And the whole idea of the citing commissioners, as to what that actually goes to. There is a line here. I've read some of the comments in some of the papers and some of the fora today which doesn't take into account this line which is: 'Referees and citing commissioners should not make their decisions based on what they consider was the intention of the offending player'.

Keith added that, "it's complicated anyway but maybe it needs to be tidied up a little."
