Keith Wood: Sean O'Brien Lions remarks "augurs well" for what he can bring to Ireland and Leinster

When speaking to our own Oisin Langan yesterday, Ireland and Leinster flanker Sean O'Brien was quite forthright in regards to what he felt was a missed opportunity for the British and Irish Lions on the tour to New Zealand.

The tour finished in a draw against the mighty All Blacks but judging from O'Brien's comments, more could have been achieved.

He said: "To be honest with you I’d be pretty critical of it. I think we probably should have won the tour and we probably should have won it comfortably enough. I think there’s a lot of learning to take from the tour in terms of the coaching setup as well and from a player's point of view in terms how we dealt with things, but it’s a weird one I suppose, drawing a series."

On Wednesday Night Rugby, former Ireland captain Keith Wood told us what he made of O'Brien's remarks.

"Do you know what? I think it's pretty reassuring. It's great to hear a player come back - I think we all kind of exhaled a great breathe of relief with the fact that the penalty was changed and it didn't go down to one kick at the very end and it would have been 2-1 to the All Blacks and the Lions still got something out of it," said Keith.

"But he's still peeved that he didn't get the victory out of it and I think that just augurs very well for his mindset, for what he can bring back from that Lions to Leinster and to Ireland for the next year or two."

He recalled his own experience of speaking honestly about a Lions tour that he had been on.

"I remember sitting, having a chat with Graham Henry after the 2001 tour and sitting at a dinner in London and he was sitting beside me. I was handed the microphone and I said I think Graham got a lot wrong and, I have to say that I got a lot wrong on that tour as well," he said.
