Kevin Kilbane's very pessimistic take on Man United's near future

Manchester United certainly are in dire straits. Unsurprisingly, they fell well short at Anfield as Premier League table-toppers swept them aside 3-1 in a one-sided encounter.

The club now languishes down in sixth, far away from the Top 4 places and facing a tough Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint Germain.

And it could be a long wait for United to return to their former position at the top of English football according to Kevin Kilbane on Off The Ball.

"I can't see United winning the league in the next 4-5 years unless they go out and get a Pochettino or whoever it's going to be who's going to go into the place and change it," he said.

"He was speaking yesterday, Gary Neville, that it's almost like now you've got to hit the reset button and you're starting from scratch and you're thinking, 'Right, you're sacrificing two years here'.

"Liverpool have gone through such a barren spell. United are Liverpool 20 years ago. That's exactly how they are."

And on Jose Mourinho's future, with uncertainty about how much Man United will have to pay him to part ways, he believes the club should be decisive.

"What is the point of United delaying the inevitable? What is the point now? There's no logic," said Kevin.

"Just cut your ties, pay the £7 million [extra], pay the £24 million or whatever it's going to be."

Joe Molloy and Kevin Kilbane were also joined by Pat Nevin to discuss the weekend's action:
