Paddy Mulligan highlights Lukaku's big game flaw

Former Ireland defender Paddy Mulligan feels Romelu Lukaku's biggest flaw is a regular drop in performance when Everton come up against the strongest teams.

The Premier League's top scorer has plundered 21 goals but only three of those goals have come against the current Top 6 (two of those in games against Manchester City).

"Lukaku has been doing very, very well. But when he needs to produce against the so-called big teams, funnily enough, he doesn't produce," Paddy told Newstalk.com.

"So it's no good just producing against West Brom or Bournemouth or Watford. You also have to produce against the Liverpools, Man United, Man Citys, Arsenals, Chelseas and Spurs of this world. When you don't produce, then you're in trouble straight away and Lukaku on Saturday was just a complete shadow of his former self."

Lukaku has indicated his ambition to move on to a Champions League club sooner rather than later but Paddy feels his inability to turn on the style against the big teams is a concern.

"The way he played on Saturday, [Everton] would be happy to get rid of him because you can't just be turning yourself on like a tap and pick your games when you're going to produce," he said.

In contrast, Liverpool's Sadio Mane scored the opening goal on Saturday and it's the latest showing from an excellent debut season at Anfield.

While an injury from the Merseyside derby could curtail the remainder of his campaign, Paddy feels his form deserves recognition when the team of the years are being announced in May.

"I would most definitely have him in there. He's been magnificent and he's only had one or two dodgy games. He's a tremendous player," he said.
