Pat Nevin highlights the major challenge Liverpool will have in trying to maintain a demanding style of play

Pat Nevin feels the difficulty of trying to play with an ultra high tempo throughout the season could end up being Liverpool's undoing this season.

Jurgen Klopp teams press aggressively which requires plenty of energy week after week and running out of steam is a risk.

The Reds suffered a setback on Saturday as they slumped to a 3-2 home defeat to a Swansea City side with problems of their own at the other end of the table.

Liverpool have had a poor January when it comes to results and face a second leg of the EFL Cup this week against Southampton, with Klopp's side seeking to overturn a 1-0 deficit.

And ex-Chelsea and Everton winger Pat Nevin feels maintaining their preferred high tempo will be difficult.

"I think that's going to be their problem. Not in every game but I think it was quite noticeable in the last 15-20 minutes against Manchester United," he said on Off The Ball.

"You play at that high tempo, you play at 100 miles an hour. It's not only that everyone has to keep on doing it for 90 minutes for every single game, it's on top of that if one or two players don't do that and everyone else tries it, it just doesn't work and everyone's looking around and wondering 'Why are you not there?'"

Nevin had already highlighted the lack of depth in the Liverpool squad this season and reiterated that point vis a vis the toll their demanding style of play will have.

"In the Premier League it's just so hard to keep that going for a whole season with 11, 12 players. It's really, really tough and specifically with that style of play," he said.

But on the whole, Nevin feels it has been a positive season overall for a club that , adding that they are "punching above their weight right now".
