Robbie Savage hits out at critics' "nonsense" negativity towards Martin O'Neill

For us, it was joy but for those of a Wales persuasion, Monday night represented heartbreak as Ireland beat them to a FIFA World Cup playoff spot.

Former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage joined Kevin Kilbane on our Football Show tonight to discuss Ireland's 1-0 win.

That difference-making Ireland goal came from pressing high up the pitch, with Jeff Hendrick winning possession high up the field and the crossing for James McClean to score the winner in Cardiff. Savage was effusive in his praise of Hendrick and "how the trap was set" by the Boys in Green in winning possession.

"I've got to say, there was one pundit in Ireland who was probably questioning should Jeff Hendrick start the game beforehand which was absolute nonsense because if you look at his work-rate and energy, he created that goal all by himself. He pressed on his own, won the ball and showed great determination and skill to keep the ball alive. And then the cut back and then the strike from James McClean with his right foot was sensational," he said, before touching on how that situation could have been avoided by Wales.

"What I can't get my head around, Kev, is that players with experience - and Ashley Williams was a better player than me, he's a leader and what he's achieved with Wales is great - but on the TV you can see Hendrick pointing, 'Give him the ball' and gives him the ball, Hennessey, but Hennessey's got to use his experience then and that goal can easily be avoided."

He also reiterated his bafflement at the criticism he feels has come for Ireland manager Martin O'Neill from some quarters.

"How important was that draw in Georgia now? These are the things you've got to take into consideration and I believe he's still getting a bit of stick off a few people which is absolute nonsense," he said of the criticism aimed at his former Leicester City boss.

"These critics have got nothing better to do to make a few headlines for themselves but that's part and parcel of being in the football spotlight."

And he added that "those who people talk about luck are talking absolute nonsense" in regards to O'Neill's team coming away from Cardiff with a win.

He also turned his attention to Chris Coleman's uncertain future as Wales manager, given that he will have plenty of club suitors.

Savage would love Coleman to stay in charge but with the 47 year old still a young manager, he conceded that, "it might time to try your hand again in club management".
