Scott Evans falls short in Irish Open final

Irish badminton No 1 Scott Evans has lost the final of the 2016 FZ Forza Irish Open.

He was facing Germany's Fabian Roth, who had won gold at the European Junior Badminton Championships in 2013, by two sets to one in the men's singles.

The Dubliner, who reached the last-16 during an impressive showing at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, had lost the opening set before battling back to take the second.

But Roth made a good start to the third and held on for victory.

Evans lost a tight first set 22-20 as the 21-year-old German eased in front.

But Evans fought back in style during a dominant second set performance.

The three-time Olympian and Irish No 1 prevailed by a 21-9 margin to take the game to a deciding set.

But he then found himself seven points down at the start of the third set.

Although he fought back, Roth managed to maintain a large gap between them.

It finally finished 21-15 to Roth in that final set.

Evans had reached the final after defeating Spain's Pablo Abian in Friday's semi-final.
