"When I came in, things weren't right" - Gerard Lyttle on righting the Sligo Rovers ship

While the top end of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division was wrapped up last night thanks to Cork City sealing the title, the bottom end still faces a frantic finish.

With two rounds of action left this season, Drogheda United are already relegated, while Finn Harps are on the brink of going down.

The final relegation place however is far from a foregone conclusion. Galway United currently occupy it on 34 points but just above them are Sligo Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic on 35 points each.

Last night, we caught up with Sligo Rovers manager Gerard Lyttle in the midst of the Bit o' Red's battle to beat the drop.

"The boys have come in and performed at this stage of the season which is really important," said Lyttle of a run that has saw them pick up a point at Shamrock Rovers and beat Bohemians at the Showgrounds.

"Listen, we've two massive games ahead of us in the next couple of weeks and what we've got to do now is keep our focus and keep working hard.

Sligo's final games see them host Derry City and then travelling to already relegated Drogheda United. The point Derry City earned at Cork last night means they will finish in the Top Four European places and in terms of targets, finishing third will be the most they can achieve this season. With Sligo fighting for survival though, Lyttle is simply focused on their own task.

"We're taking care of our own house regardless of results anywhere. It's really in our hands what we do and obviously our faith in our future, so our focus is only on Sligo Rovers and no one else."

Lyttle took charge in April and immediately spotted some of the issues he felt were holding the club back.

"When I came in, things weren't right. I'd say probably the recruitment, if you like, wasn't as good as what it should have been in pre-season and we had to bring in a lot of players when the window opened and rejig a lot of things. There was no real identity in terms of how Sligo Rovers were going about their business, so there was a lot of change in that."
