Stephanie Roche highlights importance of turn of events for Irish team

Ireland international Stephanie Roche says the events of the last week will be crucial as the national team look to fulfil their current and future ambitions.

The Sunderland forward scored the only goal from the penalty spot as Colin Bell's Irish side defeated Slovakia 1-0 in an international friendly at Tallaght Stadium.

But that fixture had been preceded by a press conference last Tuesday in which the Irish women's national team highlighted issues regarding conditions which eventually led to mediation talks that were successfully resolved.

"I was really, really proud of the team and all the girls for that because it's what we feel we need to be able to go on and achieve what we think we can do which is getting to a major tournament," Roche told Off The Ball.

"Looking back, we've got what we wanted now and in fairness we've kind of put pressure on ourselves now because we've got everything we asked for and we want to push on and be able to improve ourselves and now it's down to ourselves."

She added that she feels the changes made following the talks will be of benefit to the team going forward.

The 2014 FIFA Puskas Award runner up also explained what new head coach Bell has brought to the setup since taking the reins of the team.

"What Colin has brought has been an understanding of the gameplan. We know exactly what he wants from us. He said to us, 'the longer we can stay in the game, the better it's going to be', so it's always in our mind to keep a clean sheet which we've been really successful at over the last few games. We only conceded against North Korea," she said.

"That's what he brings and he's also brought for me personally more confidence. He's given us all the confidence to go and play."

Roche also added that it would be "everything" to her if Ireland could qualify for a World Cup or major tournament during her international career.
