Stephen Kenny: "It's just wrong that the league has not been extended"

Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny says it is "wrong" that the League of Ireland season has not been extended in order to alleviate fixture congestion.

Involvement in the Europa League group stages as well as advancing to the FAI Cup final has left the reigning Irish champions facing an extremely busy period of fixtures on all fronts.

Speaking to Newstalk Sports' Oisin Langan after watching his side beat Cork City to go four points clear, Kenny did not hide his frustration.

"It's just wrong that the league has not been extended until Sunday or the Bank Holiday Monday. It's just absolutely wrong I think," he said.

"It's so disappointing, just the lack of vision really because it means we end up having an under-strength team against Zenit, realistically if you're talking about winning the league. Because you've got to go Friday-Monday in the league - Shamrock Rovers, Longford - and then Zenit on Thursday night. And then three in five days on Sunday, Tuesday and Friday."

Meanwhile Kenny isn't underestimating the value of the victory over Cork City as he watched his side stretch their lead at the top of the league.

They went into the game holding a narrow one point lead over second placed Cork.

But inspired by Daryl Horgan, Dundalk won 2-1 to go four points clear.

Kenny was thrilled with the manner of the win.

"A fantastic win. We mustn't underestimate that win. That was a brilliant win Absolutely thrilled. It was a kick in the teeth losing at the weekend to Sligo," he said.

"To have turn it around in a couple of days against a Cork team that have been prolific over the last while, to go and win in the manner that we did - and deservedly won I felt - it's a great night for the town, for Dundalk and the team."
