Stuart Byrne gives his take on Shelbourne's future Dalymount Park move

Ex-Shelbourne midfielder Stuart Byrne has described today's announcement by his former club that they will relocate to a redeveloped Dalymount Park to ground-share with Bohemians as a positive.

Earlier, Shelbourne's directors and board of management confirmed that the club had come to an agreement with Dublin City Council to relocate to a redeveloped Dalymount Park as "co-anchor tenants" with Bohemian FC.

"It's a positive. At least both clubs now are quite secure in their future, know where they're going to be in four or five years time," said Stuey.

He added that ground-sharing is the best option in the circumstances.

"I've never been a big fan of this ground-sharing between the two clubs. However, I have to concede that the situation that Shels have found themselves in is quite dire, considering the debt that the club has been in for the last 10-plus years.

"I think the positive for Shelbourne is that the club have hopefully put their debt-laden years behind them and they can move forward. If Shels are a debt-free club, then the potential is huge."

But in an ideal world, Stuey says "I'd like to see Shels go back to Ringsend. Simple as that."

"That's their natural home, that's where they were born 125 years ago," he said, acknowledging that it would be very complicated to try and go down that route.
