Matt Healy has been touted as a potential option for Ireland and it seems Joe Schmidt agrees as he called the Connacht wing up to an international camp this weekend.
The Irish Times' Gerry Thornley joined Off The Ball tonight in the wake of Connacht's entertaining Challenge Cup to Grenoble in France.
"He's a great story. It shows you never to give up," said Gerry of the 27-year-old, who was relocated to full-back against Grenoble.
"This is a lad who came home from the under-20 World Cup as a very quick, try-scoring scrum-half and [was] let go by the Leinster hierarchy and drifts into club rugby and goes up and does a bit of studying in UCD, plays club rugby with Landsdowne and one day is just back into wing full-time because they had a good scrum-half at the time.
"[He] scores a couple of tries from the wing in an end of season relegation game - more or less - and the following season just becomes full-on a winger, performs really well and Connacht give him a trial and three seasons later he's in an Irish squad, he's the leading try-scorer in the Pro 12 and he shows what he can do from full-back."
So much so that the French journalists at the match were highly impressed by his showing at 15 according to Gerry.
"The French journalists could not believe that this lad was only playing his second ever game at full-back. They were asking me why wasn't he already playing for Ireland," he said.
