Ireland's Ultan Dillane on how his mother bribed him into playing rugby in the first place

Ireland newcomer Ultan Dillane says his mother's advice to him pre-game were one of the things that stayed with him ahead of his international debut against England.

The Connacht second row, who made his first Ireland appearance in the Six Nations match was one of the new caps who made an impression during the campaign.

He joined Off The Ball's Joe Molloy to reflect on a whirlwind few weeks in green which started with that match in Twickenham.

"My Mum before the game had just said 'even if you have one good involvement in the game, it's something that people who don't know you will remember' and that was something that I definitely set out to do whether it was a big tackle or just a good carry," said the Paris-born Kerry native.

"All I wanted to do was one moment that people I hope will remember and I was so lucky that I came on against tired bodies and they might just have underestimated me a little and that was it."

That's not all. His mother who is a native of Kerry, was the person who first encouraged him to take up rugby above other sports ... with a little bit of monetary persuasion.

"She thought it would be a good sport to try out after GAA kind of failed. So it was a fiver each and we went down and never looked back. It was pretty good," he said, before discussing how he and his family adapted to life in Kerry after making the move from Paris at the age of 7, including having to learn English from scratch, and then the progression to enter the Connacht academy ranks and eventually the first team.
