87 dead NFL players test positive for brain disease

The concussion debate continues to draw attention across a range of contact sports as more information is uncovered regarding the devastating injury.

American football, in particular, has been focused on as the physical nature of the sport results in extensive head traumas.

A new report carried out by the Department of Veteran Affairs and Boston University identifies the degenerative brain disease, CTE, in 96 per cent of players examined and 79 per cent of all football players.

The NFL continues to revise safety measures including the adjustment of head equipment and outlawing tackling when the player leads with their head but there are still significant questions and issues that have not been resolved on the matter.

Earlier this year, the NFL approved a potential $1 billion settlement with around 5,000 former players, who sued over head injuries and the resulting effects including memory loss, depression and dementia.

The latest results will just magnify the dilemma faced by former players as the new NFL season kicks in to gear.
