A brief history of Spanish-Italian European Cup finals

Barcelona and Juventus face each other on Saturday evening in the Champions League final in Berlin. It is the first time the two sides have face each other in the European Cup final but how have previous Spanish Italian finals gone since the tournaments inception?

Surprisingly, there have only been six European Cup finals between teams from the two countries with the last coming in 1998.

1957: Real Madrid 2-0 Fiorentina

Real Madrid who were the inaugural champions defeated Fiorentina in the tournament's second final in the Bernabeu, becoming the first side to win the Cup on home soil.

An Alfredo di Stefano penalty and a Francisco Gento goal ensured the Spaniards lifted the trophy on from of a crowd of 120,000.

1958: Real Madrid 3-2 AC Milan (AET)

The first final to go to extra time, gave Real their third title as the Spanish side continued their early dominance of the European Cup.

With the teams going into the half time break scoreless, the second half proved to be a different affair with four goals being scored in the second half. AC Milan were leading 2-1 with just over ten minutes remaining when Hector Rial scored for Real to send the game to extra time.

Francisco Gento scored, as he did in the previous final, this time in extra time to give Real the win in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels. The Spaniards would go on to win two more titles in the following two years to win five in a row.

1964: Inter Milan 3-1 Real Madrid

Inter Milan won their first European Cup after defeated the five time champions Real Madrid in Vienna.

Sandro Mazzola wrote his name into club history scoring twice for the Italians. The side never trailed in the final and Aurelio Milani scored the third to ensure victory.

They would go on to retain their title a year later, beating Benfica in the San Siro.

1992: Barcelona 1-0 Sampdoria (AET)

The first final of the Champions League era was the first time we saw a Spanish-German final.

It was also Barcelona's first win in the tournament as they defeated Sampdoria in Wembley. It was the second year in a row, the game finished scoreless after 90 minutes.

Unlike the previous final, the 1992 version failed to go to penalties as current Southampton manager Ronald Koeman scored the only goal of the game in the second half of extra time.

1994: AC Milan 4-0 Barcelona

The final in Athens saw the most one sided scoreline since 1989 when Milan defeated Steaua Bucharest by the same margin.

The win would be Milan's sole victory in a period where the played three finals in a row, losing to Marseille and Ajax either side of the win.

Fabio Capello's side scored two goals either side of the break, with Daniele Massaro scoring twice in the first half. Dejan Savicevic and Marcel Desailly scored in the second half to compound Barcelona's misery.

1998: Real Madrid 1-0 Juventus

This weekends' finalists Juventus suffered heartbreak in Amsterdam in 1998, losing their second final in a row.

After losing to Borussia Dortmund the year before, a Predrag Mijatovic goal gave Real their eighth title. The Spanish side were then managed by Jupp Heynckes who would win the trophy with Bayern Munich in 2013.
