Serena Williams wins a 23rd Grand Slam at the Australian Open

Serena Williams has just claimed her 23rd Grand Slam, after winning the Australian Open against her sister Venus.

The younger of the two has now bypassed the record held Steffi Graf and is now just one short of the all-time record owned by Margaret Court.

This was the ninth Grand Slam final meeting of the sisters and eight years on from the most recent one.

Both Williams sisters traded games in the first set. After bringing it back to 2-2, Venus edged one game in front. But the Wimbledon champion levelled the tie before stretching into a two-game lead.

Venus took the next game but some unforced errors, enabled Serena to steal the opening set. Venus could well have stolen victory today, or at least minimised her sister's scoring power, had the net been a fraction lower to the ground.

She showed terrific composure to take a point at the end of superb rally in the second set, but in the end she couldn't diminish the strength of Serena.

Despite taking some time to settle into the contest, it was Serena who proceeded to take her seventh Australian Open in straight sets (6-4) (6-4) and reclaim her world number one ranking.
