Begovic endures nightmare debut

Asmir Begovic and Chelsea endured a night to forget on Tuesday when they lost 4-2 to American side New York City Red Bulls as part of their American tour.

Chelsea took the lead through Loic Remy in the 26th minute, but goals from Franklin Castellanos, Sean Davis and 16-year-old Tyler Adams saw the Premier League champions trail heading in at the break.

Eden Hazard was introduced at the interval to inject some life into a dejected Chelsea side and his goal gave the Blues a much needed shot in the arm.

But Davis doubled his tally on 76 minutes to put the game beyond doubt, a result that manager Jose Mourinho will try not to dwell on.

"If we had won 10-0 that wouldn’t have been any good" he said.

"We needed a test and we received one. They were sharp, quick high motivation, very happy to play against us and they gave us a better match then we thought.

As for Begovic, conceding four goals in 45 minutes will not do his confidence much good, but Mourinho moved to ensure that the result was merely a flash in the pan.

"We have done 11 sessions in six days. We trust these players. We play this team 10 times we win nine but the second half was a disaster."

The Portuguese will be looking past the game toward their next fixture against PSG, and to the transfer market where their ongoing saga to lure John Stones to Stamford Bridge rumbles on.
