Brendan O'Brien on Ireland-Georgia: "The worst performance of the O'Neill era by some stretch"

The fall-out from Ireland's disappointing draw with Georgia on Saturday continued on the Sunday Paper Review.

Mick Foley and Brendan O'Brien joined Nathan Murphy on Off the Ball and Foley said: "There's a genuine collective agreement that what we saw in Tblisi wasn't exactly up to mustard. Roy Curtis said in the Sunday Times: 'This wasn't a death sentence but it's Ireland in palliative care' - that's the one that stood out.

"Somebody else, I think it was Philip Quinn or somebody else, said 'it was bordering on inept' and I think they're all fair. I mean you can't look at that game last night and come away with anything other than 'this is just way, way below standard'.

O'Brien added: "Derision, you mention Martin O'Neill interview last night...I saw a bit of a transcript from it there last night or this morning and yeah he's irritated with Tony O'Donoghue but you're thinking 'I'm going to give them a pass on this' in the sense that he can't cut the players throats when they're playing Serbia on Tuesday night.

"You would assume behind closed doors walls are melting, you know, wallpaper's being stripped off, people are being put up against walls and basically told 'listen, this has to be better than this'.

"For me anyway, in my memory, I don't know what you lads think but definitely for me, the worst performance of the O'Neill era by some stretch against a team of that ability. Keeping in mind that they had a new goalie, they were missing the midfielder that normally plays in front of their back four, they were missing a striker and their captain. What more do you want?

"I mean, Ireland don't do easy games. There's no handy gimme for Ireland in any scenario. There own performance made this so, so difficult and almost an absolute disaster. They got away with it," he added.
