Carlos Sainz Jr. 'conscious' after Grand Prix practice lap crash

The final practice for the Russian Grand Prix was today abandoned after Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz Jr. was involved in a high speed collision.

Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost told Sky Sports F1 the driver was "conscious" and that they would make a decision later on today as to whether they will take part in the race at all.

Tost said: "Carlos is conscious, he's with the doctors now. They will see if he can continue the race weekend."

FIA press officer Matteo Bonciani confimred the reports and said that doctors would be monitoring his situation closely in the coming hours.

"Carlos is conscious, he's OK. He has talked to the doctor, so apparently we think it's fine," he told reporters.

"We need to see when he will be a little bit better, he is here inside the medical centre. We will see what's going on, we will need to see how he is when the adrenaline has gone down.

"He is conscious, he is talking, and he even tried to remove his helmet on his own."

It took 20 minutes to safely extract Sainz from the wreckage, with teammate Max Verstappen clearly distressed by the events as he asked his team: "Is he okay because it looks like a big one?".

Replays of the incident appear to show Sainz lose control of his Toro Rosso after braking and the 21-year-old was taken to the on-track medical centre .
