Cavani is the name ringing in the ears as Man United striker hunt intensifies

With Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin now on the books, Manchester United will be turning their attention to gaps within the squad.

One of those is up front with Wayne Rooney the only viable option after at centre-forward following Robin van Persie's departure to Fenerbahce.

United We Stand editor and Man United expert Andy Mitten was on Off The Ball and he highlighted that priority, as well as the main name being bandied about.

"I think Manchester United are looking for world class strikers because the team didn't score enough goals last season," he said.

"Edinson Cavani is someone United spoke to when Moyes was in charge. He asked for too much money. He's a name who I keep hearing again, and again and again. I've heard other names but I've not had any harder evidence about them."

Mitten also gave us background on the fruitful chase for Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin and how they might be deployed tactically by manager Louis van Gaal.

But Mitten also revealed his belief that No 2 goalkeeper and former Barcelona starter Victor Valdes, who was left out of the squad for the US summer tour, is on his way out.

"I can't see him staying at Manchester United. It's as simple as that," he said.
