Cian Tracey on Max Deegan: "He does the basics so well but he's explosive"

Leinster made short work of Italian side Zebre with a comprehensive 41-6 win at the RDS on Saturday.

Such was the dominance of the display from Leo Cullen's side, Cian Tracy doesn't think the Leinster management can take much from the game other then the five points they put on the board.

"I don't think Leinster will have learned anything at all," he told Off the Ball's Oisin Langan. "I mean it had such an inevitability about it.

"We got a real heavy down-pour there in the first half and I think that kind of effected Leinster's flow but you saw once it dried-up - Leinster just ran riot in the second-half.

"So much of that was done to Zebra as well. They showed no ambition in how they played in how they played and I thought it was very interesting to note they named four props and a hooker on their bench.

"If you're coming to the RDS to play in Dublin - you have to at least try and play a bit of ball. They showed absolutely no ambition - they got a couple of penalties which, in the second half, I think they were trailing 17-3 and they opted for the posts! You're wondering 'what are they doing here?' but Leinster got the job done.

"It was a professional display. I think it was all about guys coming through unscathed. You look at Dan Leave started, Cian Healy started, Tadgh Furlong, Devin Toner - they're obviously all going toe involved against the Scarlets at the end of the month and for that, it was just about getting through unscathed.

"We saw lots of the younger guys - I thought Max Deegan was excellent. I was talking to Ger about it during the week on Off the Ball AM - this guy is super, super, talented and he's got the potential to go far. A former under-20 World Player of the Year nominee - I thought he was excellent.

"James Lowe again, was very good. Nice to see Gavin Mullin, son of Brendan Mullin make his debut as well. It was that kind of day. Leo Cullen was able to bring these guys like Abdaladze came off the bench and scored - it was that kind of day where it just went right for them.

Tracy praised Leinster Number 8 Max Deegan for the quick thinking that led to his first try, saying: "It was very similar to Conor Murray's try last week and it was interesting to note that not even the Leinster guys had been alive to it - for someone so young, it's an unbelievably positive sign.

"He does the basics so well but he's explosive. We saw that when he backed himself when he scored the second try - he could have passed it out to Adam Byrne. Adam Byrne had a lear run to the line but he backed himself and he took about three tackles but he carried them over the line and that's a guy playing with a lot of confidence.

"Jack Conan obviously has a knock at the moment and I know Jordi Murphy played Number 8 but Max Deegan is coming hard here - he's going to push for the rest of the season for a starting place and if not, a place on the bench," he added.
