Cork City's wait to clinch the SSE Airtricity League title continues

Cork City moved a point closer to SSE Airtricity League clinching the title.

A win would've done the job last night but they were held at home to a 1-1 draw by Dundalk.

Brian Gartland's first half own goal was canceled out by Robbie Benson's 87th minute goal.

The party was put on hold as the 7,000 fans that packed Turners Cross will have to wait for another few days before seeing their side crowned champions.

Manager John Caulfield remains calm despite the set-back:

“We came up against the form team, all season our form has been phenomenal but maybe in the last five or six weeks it drifted a little bit and we were being questioned.

“The most important thing for us is that last Friday night we needed 5 points to win the league, now we need two, we’ve four games to go.

“If someone told you at the start of the season that going into October you needed one win out of four to win the league, you’d have taken that.”

Caulfield took plenty of positives from the draw even though he felt his side were clearly the better of the two:

“The most important thing tonight is that our performance was excellent, it was disappointing because certainly we deserved to win the match.

“In the first half we had ample opportunities to get a second goal and we didn’t, in the end the Dundalk goal took a deflection. It was a disappointing goal so late.

“The positives for me, it was a full house, fantastic support and a cracking performance by us, back to what we were good at.”
