Could Dundalk's Towell miss out on a major individual award due to unpopularity?

Dundalk midfielder Richie Towell has arguably been the best player in the League of Ireland over the last couple of years.

The goalscoring threat, who has been heavily criticised for kicking out at St Patrick's Athletic's Jamie McGrath last night, missed out on the PFAI Player of the Year award last year.

The Irish Independent and Off The Ball's Daniel McDonnell told us his theory is that Towell may miss out again.

There is a perception that the talented player is unpopular among opposition players and tonight on Off The Ball, Joe asked," So how many guys are sitting there with their Player of the Year award going 'hmm, he's an a**ehole, hmm don't like him, don't like him'. Do players take it seriously?"

Former Shelbourne midfielder Stuart Byrne pointed out a few issues with the voting system, while referencing the Towell case.

"Put it this way, if he didn't win it last year, I'd be very surprised if he wins it this year," he said.

Stuey gave us an inside track on the voting mechanism and revealed that "unfortunately, a little bit of bloc voting can tend to go on."
