Dan Shanahan: "We've nothing won but we've silenced a few critics"

Waterford beat Kilkenny on Saturday in the All-Ireland qualifiers in a pulsating match in Thurles on Saturday.

With time ticking away, it appeared Waterford were destined to win only for the Cats to reel them in and force extra-time at Semple Stadium.

The Deise eventually overcame Brian Cody's charges and gained a measure of revenge for their loss in last season's championship.

Speaking to Newstalk Sport's Oisin Langan afterwards and asked what the win means, Waterford selector Dan Shanahan said: "Simply, we're in the next round of the championship. Kilkenny are a great team and they still are a great team. It's disappointing we didn't see it out in normal time but we came in the second half of extra time and turned it on. I think we deserved the win.

"To be honest, it was all about winning the game. We came up here to win the game, we have the game won and we're not getting carried away, I can assure you that. I just said that there to the boys, we're not getting carried away.

"Brian Cody said that to us in the dressing room as well...we've won the prize today but we're delighted.

"To be going off and beating Kilkenny, it's great for the boys. We have to park it now.

"That's the next challenge now (to improve decision making). It's no good beating former All-Ireland champions if you don't push on. That's the big thing.

"We've nothing won but we've silenced a few critics there today...we're delighted with the performance with the heart the lads showed was unbelievable in injury time," he added.
