Dublin to fund installation of gym in GAA's new Abbotstown facility

Dublin will fund the installation of a high-spec gym in the GAA's new National Games Development Centre in Abbotstown in a funding arrangement confirmed by Dublin County Board chairman Sean Shanley.

Shanley stated that they would be taking up the offer to use the facility, as open to all county boards, and that given the facility was based in Dublin, they would be funding the project to install a gym.

Speaking to The Independent, Head of Communications for the GAA Alan Milton said that a gym had not been "top priority" for the team in charge of developing the center, and Dublin had offered to contribute given that they wanted the facilities there to be adequate for use by players in both development squads and at the highest level.

"Dublin made an observation and approached the GAA on it," said Milton. "They were more than happy to contribute to it because it is located in Dublin. If there was a gymnasium going in they wanted it to be fit for purpose. But their offer won't give them any proprietary claims on it."

The installation of equipment will be overseen by Bryan Cullen, Dublin's high-performance manager, who has previously worked as strength and conditioning coach with Leinster and captained the county to the All-Ireland title in 2011.

Milton added that Cullen's involvement was as a result of his expertise in the area, and it was stressed at the launch that there would be no "special first say" given to Dublin as a result of the funding or input from Cullen.
