Dundalk do the double

Dundalk beat Cork City 2-1 to claim the FAI Cup, and to complete a historic double for the side from Louth.

In a fiercely-contested game with their recent title rivals, Dundalk were looking to add to their SSE Airtricity League Premier Division title. 30,000 from both sides of the country filled the Aviva Stadium for a match that has often failed to ignite in years past.

Dundalk defender Sean Hoare headed home a corner from Michael Duffy to give the Lilywhites the lead, to a chorus of cheers from elated travelling supporters.

It was Hoare at the centre of the game just a few minutes later, as he brought down Cork's Karl Sheppard in the area. Kieran Sadlier kept his composure to slide the ball narrowly under Gary Rogers in the Dundalk net.

But it was in the 73rd minute that Dundalk broke away with a goal worthy of the occasion.

After winning the ball from the opposition, Jamie McGrath fed the ball to Sean Gannon on the right. Gannon delivered a beautiful ball to Patrick McEleney who had darted into the box, and headed decisively.

A late free-kick from Cork was bundled away, bringing the occasion to a close. Dundalk's players and staff revelled to the music of their own fans, delighted with a wonderfully competitive season.
