EA Sports Cup: Galway United beat Sligo Rovers to make semi-final

Galway United were the first team to book their place in the semi-final of the EA Sports Cup on Monday evening, but needed penalties to see off a stubborn Sligo Rovers side at the Showgrounds.

The game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes, but sparked to life in extra-time as Mathew Stevens opened the scoring for the home side.

Galway were level through Ronan Murray just two minutes later and they took the lead on the stroke of half-time thanks to a goal from Gavan Holohan.

With just five minutes left on the clock, Kieran Sadlier converted from the spot to bring the game to penalties.

Craig Roddan, Liam Martin and Tobi Adebayo-Rowling all missed penalties, allowing Holohan to convert the crucial spot-kick. Shane Keegan's side were 4-1 winners in the shootout.

Holders St. Patrick's Athletic had their title defence coming to an end this evening with a 2-0 defeat to Premier Division leaders, Cork City.

Connor Ellis broke the deadlock on 67 minutes, before Stephen Dooley secured the victory with a stoppage time strike.

Dundalk also booked their place in the semi-final of the cup this evening. They were 3-0 winners against First Division leaders, Waterford FC.

Ciaran Kilduff scored in the second half to give the home side the lead, before Thomas Stewart added a second on 70 minutes.

Conor Clifford wrapped up the win 10 minutes from time with a strike from edge of the box.
