Ex-Ireland keeper Paddy Kenny praised for cancelling contract to save his club money

Former Irish international Paddy Kenny has agreed to cancel his club contract with Bury after suffering an injury in training.

The 37-year-old tore his calf recently and has told the club to terminate his short-term contract after being told that he will not recover from the set-back before the deal ends.

Manager David Flitcroft has praised the goalkeeper's decision to end the deal in order to save the club money.

"He had guaranteed money there but he has said he can't take money off the football club, which is quite a unique circumstance," he said.

Kenny won seven Ireland caps between 2004 and 2006, while he also played for Sheffield United and Leeds United at club level.

He previously played at Bury between 1998 and 2002, before returning for his second spell at the League One club this year.
