Four players who (probably) regret joining Chelsea post-Abramovich

Every club has had players that should not have joined them. Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City are all guilty.

But on this week's Team 33, the topic of Scott Parker came up.

He had a fairly forgettable spell at Stamford Bridge and here's a few more who should have waited before joining Chelsea or waited a little bit longer.

Scott Parker

Richard mentioned the scientifically-tested "Frank Lampard" Theorem of players who become over-rated to the point that they later become under-rated.

That could apply to Scott Parker if you are being harsh.

But early on in his career, he showed promise for his boyhood Charlton Athletic, becoming a key part of their midfield.

That finally culminated in a move away in 2004. Unfortunately, unlike the aforementioned Lampard who joined pre-Abramovic, the midfielder joined in January 2004 at a time when the Blues were spending heavily less than a year after the arrival of their Russian owner.

Lampard and Claude Makalele were ahead of him in the pecking order, along with other recruits such as Tiago Mendes.

Just 15 Premier League appearances followed before he left for Newcastle in 2005 and he did not even play enough games to get a winner’s medal in the 2004-05 title-winning campaign.

Fair play to the Fulham captain though as he did salvage his career going on to win regular England honours (caps not trophies because England don't win the latter) and being a starter at Euro 2012.

Perhaps, he did not stay long enough at Chelsea to do long-term harm to his career but it definitely was a blip on the road.

Shaun Wright-Phillips

On one of our recent shows, the topic of Wright-Phillip's "greatness" pre-Chelsea. Certainly he had bags of potential and was a regular at Manchester City before swapping the club for London life.

That's where his career stalled post-2005 as three years at Chelsea saw his star dim significantly.

More of an impact player than a starter, the winger was left out of the squad for the 2008 Champions League final defeat and returned to City shortly afterwards.

All in all, he was never the same after his time at Stamford Bridge and is now a bit of a forgotten man since joining Queens Park Rangers.

Gael Kakuta

Chelsea went to great lengths to attract him to Stamford Bridge, yet where is the Frenchman now?

Still at the club - technically - is the answer. He's still on Chelsea's books, but the 23-year-old is one of those players that has spent more time on loan than within the halls at the Bridge.

He has made fewer than 20 appearances for the Blues since switching from Lens in 2009 and has since spent spells on loan in Italy, France, Spain and the Netherlands.

Although still young, the lack of stability cannot be good for his development long-term.

Oriol Romeu

A graduate of Barcelona's famed academy, the defensive midfielder only made two appearances for the club's seniors before making the switch to Chelsea.

Promising and arriving in 2011, at a time when anything coming from La Masia was seen as a rough diamond, there were high hopes for the now-23-year-old.

Yet amid changes of regime in West London, the Catalan is another on the loan circuit currently at Stuttgart after spending last term at Valencia.

Like Kakuta, time is on his side - and he is contracted to Chelsea for another couple of years - but perhaps a move to a less high-profile club in his homeland would have given him more career stability.
