John Hartson: Wales relish the underdog tag

Despite already getting the better of them in the qualifying campaign, Wales go into their European Championship quarter-final against Belgium as underdogs.

And John Hartson wouldn't have it any other way.

The former Wales striker spoke to Off The Ball this evening and explained that the tag will only benefit Chris Coleman's side on Friday night.

"We've been underdogs in everything we've done in football," he said, "We were underdogs coming into the tournament and faced a group of Slovakia, Russia and England. We were certainly underdogs to win the group.

"We went in possibly favourites against Northern Ireland, but I think Northern Ireland set up very, very well because they're a very organised team.

"We were under no illusions as to how tough the game would be and they started as underdogs. I think they were the better team on the day and they were a bit unfortunate to have lost.

"And again, we'll be underdogs against Belgium. We love the underdog tag. We seem to excel under that sort of pressure. We're a good team, our system doesn't change. We'll play three centre backs, with wing backs and we have a threat up front in Gareth Bale.

"As I said, we like the underdog tag, everyone keeps writing Wales off but we are the last home nation team in the tournament. We're in the quarter-finals! This is the biggest game we've had in 8 years."
