GRAPHIC: These are the 10 most expensive young footballers in Europe

You can't put a price on potential, but that hasn't stopped clubs around Europe from slapping some huge asking prices on their young stars in a bid to fend off interest or cash in on a player who might not turn out to be as good as they thought.

One of this summer's most high profile transfers did in fact feature a young talent in the form of Raheem Sterling, and when it comes to players who are under 21-years-old, his £49 million move from Liverpool puts him top of the list of the top 10 most expensive young stars in Europe.

These figures, put together by Soccerex, are the cream of the crop when it comes to young footballing talent...or at least that's what their price tags claim anyway.

Marquinhos of Paris Saint-Germain and Memphis Depay who recently moved to Manchester United round out the top three in the list, while Depay's new team-mate Luke Shaw also makes the cut.

Juventus forward Domenico Berardi is a hugely promising player whose four goals in one match against AC Milan mark him out as one to watch, while Uruguayan José Giménez of Atlético Madrid may also have a big future ahead of him.

Those unfamailiar with the Bundesliga might not know of Hakan ÇalhanoÄŸlu's talent, but Manuel Neuer certainly knows all about him.

Despite Spain's domination of the game at underage level in recent years, only José Gayà makes the list, and while Aymeric Laporte plays his club football in La Liga for Athletic Bilbao, he is in fact French. Finally, rumoured Liverpool target Mateo Kovacic rounds out the list, whose rather spectacular goal against Lazio last season is worth a watch.
