“He’s a one trick-pony, but it’s an excellent trick” ”“ John Giles on Klopp

John Giles believes that Liverpool have been very impressive of late, but that the Reds will need to improve their defending if they are to be successful.

The former Ireland international and Leeds legend joined Nathan on the line to recap a mad week of Champions League action.

“I think [Klopp] does get the best out of players, there is no doubt about that. He has this enthusiasm, he has this go. [Andy] Robertson has been one of the star players for him, and I think Van Dijk has made a diffence. I have always described him as being a one-trick pony, with an excellent trick.

“They have been good for the last couple of weeks, but is there going to be a consistency there that’s needed? It is a bit like Guardiola – he’s ‘go, go, go – attack, attack, attack’ – and when he’s put under pressure at the back, he is usually not very good.

“A few weeks ago, a few people were questioning him and thinking he’s a bit of a clown, but he is capable of doing what he’s done and he has done brilliantly in the last week against Manchester City. But is the consistency going to be there week-in, week-out in giving goals away? They have done well over the last couple of weeks, but the good defending has to be proven yet.”

On the personnel available to Klopp, Giles was positive about the acquisitions he made in January and during the course of last summer.

“[Van Dijk] is definitely the best defender they have had, if you look at Lovren and the others. But I think Robertson coming in at full-back has definitely been a help. It’s been a really good week for Liverpool, no doubt. But I think that, even still, defensively they are not as good as they should be.”
