"I don't think the record stacks up" - Does Rooney's goal-record really signify true greatness?

For 45 years Bobby Charlton's England goalscoring stood serenly staring down all-comers.

But last night, the 49-goal mark was finally broken by Wayne Rooney as he hammered in a penalty against Switzerland in a Euro 2016 qualifier.

But what does that record mean for the Manchester United captain's place in English football history?

"He is our highest goalscorer and it is a notable landmark and he deserves credit for that. But the suggestion that he is beyond th statistical fact that he scored one more goal than Bobby Charlton and won two more games, I think begs a lot of questions really," said Chief Sports Writer for The Independent James Lawton on Off The Ball, who witnessed Charlton in his pomp and reminisced about his vital role for England from 1958 to 1970.

"*I'm afraid Wayne Rooney, for all his prodigious scoring and his bursts of excellence from time to time, I'm afraid I don't think the record stacks up."
