"I never thought Mick McCarthy was that great a manager. I was surprised the Irish FA wanted him"

February 1996 is an important date for both Millwall and their then-manager Mick McCarthy.

He was leaving to take over the Republic of Ireland job, while in the space of 3-4 months, the Lions of South London were about to go from mid-table security to relegation by that very summer  - a relegation which left them in Division 2 (the name for the third tier at the time) until 2001 and mired in administration for a spell.

Twenty years on, is there any lingering resentment towards Big Mick and what was the now Ipswich boss like in his first full-time role as a manager?

On this week's Team 33, Raf and Joe spoke to Nick Hart, who presents the Achtung Millwall podcast and has served as chairman of the club's supporters trust.

He spoke of a Mick McCarthy who can be judged by two phases at Millwall: the early days where he carried on the momentum of Bruce Rioch's exciting side and the less successful second half of his reign between 1994 and his '96 departure when he became the man the FAI identified as the man to replace Big Jack Charlton but did not deliver as much joy for the fans.

Other insights shared by Nick include McCarthy's slightly glass eye for a player while at Millwall, which was comically apparent with the disastrous signings of a pair of Russia internationals, and that when Mick signed as a veteran player in 1990 that he was seen as somewhat "exotic" due to his immediate playing past in France with Lyon.

And Nick also added an intriguing conclusion to our interview, saying: "I was actually surprised that he went on to the managerial success that he did. I never thought he was that great a manager. I was surprised the Irish FA wanted him."
