'I think he fled the airport because he was going to be lynched by the crowd'

Former Shelbourne and Longford Town midfielder Stuart Byrne admits he was a bit worried that Dundalk were only flying out today for their Champions League first leg against BATE Borisov, which kicks off tomorrow.

And there is good reason based on past experience from his playing career as he told Off The Ball tonight.

"Amazingly, enough when I was at Longford,  (Dundalk manager) Stephen [Kenny] was manager. A plane didn't actually turn up. We had to stay overnight. With Longford Town, we were actually playing Litex Lovech of Bulgaria in the UEFA Cup and we were flying out on a Tuesday for a Thursday game and literally the plane didn't turn up. There was no record of it," he said.

"It was done through a third party and I think he fled the airport because he was going to be lynched by the crowd. But we had to stay overnight in Dublin airport and we had to separate three ways and flew via London. We just made it before the 24 hour cut-off deadline. So there's always a risk."

We also spoke to Dundalk manager Stephen Kenny tonight about their trip over to Minsk to face BATE.

Listen to both interviews via the podcast and you can also watch Stuey give his prediction of tomorrow's match and the weekend's League of Ireland action on Newstalk.com tomorrow afternoon.
