Ian Harte announces his retirement from football

Former Ireland international Ian Harte has announced his retirement from football.

The former Leeds United and Bournemouth defender made the announcement on his twitter account this morning.

The 37 year old played 63 times for his country scoring on 12 occasions. He made his name at Leeds United and played for the club in their glory years of the early 2000's. After leaving Leeds he spent three season in La Liga with Levante before returning to England to join Roy Keane's Sunderland.

Harte enjoyed a late career resurgence after joining Reading in 2010 from Carlisle and he helped the Royals back to the Premier League. He finished his career at Bournemouth as he helped the Cherries gain promotion to the Premier League last season.

Despite being a defender, Harte will be best know for his goalscoring feats from free kicks and open play.
