Ireland overcome Portugal challenge in Women's Euro 2017 qualifier

Ireland's women's soccer team have picked up an important away win against Portugal to get their Euro 2017 qualifying campaign on track.

Sue Ronan's team recorded a 2-1 victory in Northern Portugal to earn their first points of the campaign, having lost their opening qualifier at home to Finland last month.

It was Portugal who drew first blood this evening with a 16th minute Carole Costa goal.

But defender Louise Quinn, who scored her first international goal against the same opposition three years ago, put Ireland right back in it six minutes later.

And the second Irish goal and ultimate winner came at a vital time, five minutes before the break as Aine O'Gorman found the net against a Portugal side who recorded fewer shots on target but 10 more goal attempts.

Ireland's group consists of Portugal, who have now lost two from two, as well as leaders Finland, Montenegro and Spain.
