Irish boxing association not planning Olympic changes after pro fighters get the nod

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association say that there will be making no immediate changes to their Olympic selection process in the wake of the decision to allow professional boxers to participate at this summer's Games in Rio.

Seven Irish fighters have already secured qualification and the IABA insist that their places will not be affected.

The Association's President Pat Ryan, says that they will be making no changes until they have had a full consultation with all the relevant stakeholders here.

"The IABA wishes to make it very clear that there will be no immediate changes in response to this vote, until there has been a full consultation with the relevant stakeholders within the organisation," said Ryan in an IABA statement.

Boxer Carl Frampton says allowing pro boxers into the Games is "ridiculous".

Elsewhere, the International Olympic Committee has pledged to step up its pre-Olympic drug testing programme ahead of this year's Rio games.

The budget for the programme has been doubled and testers will focus their efforts on the likes of Russia, Kenya and Mexico, where the current testing programmes have been deemed to be non-compliant.
