"It means so much to us here in Esker"

It has been a historic period for Esker Hills Golf Club in Offaly.

Two of their members won prestigious amateur and professional titles in the space of the last eight days. Alan Lowry was victorious last weekend in Westmeath in the Mullingar Scratch Club before his older brother Shane won the WGC Bridgestone Invitational last night in Ohio.

Club member Ray Molloy spoke to Newstalk Breakfast this morning on the back of Shane's win about what it means to the club. He told Shane Coleman about Shane's pedigree at the club since it opened in 1996.

"He was about 12 years old when he came to Esker.... After a year or two people began were saying that he hits the ball well and swings well. He got a better swing and improved bit by bit".

Ray was in "no doubt" that Shane will go further in career and he paid tribute to Lowry's sporting heritage. His father Brendan and uncles Sean and Mick won the All Ireland title for Offaly in 1982, denying Kerry a five in a row.
