It was a deliberate stamp and should have been a red - David Connolly

Former Ireland striker David Connolly is certain Diego Costa should have been sent off after the Chelsea striker's stamping antics against Liverpool last night.

The Spaniard was involved in two incidents - involving Emre Can and Martin Skrtel - in which he appeared to stamp on both players during Chelsea's extra-time victory in the League Cup semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge.

"The type of player he is he lives on the edge," Connolly told Oisin Langan on Newstalk's Breakfast this morning. "When you're a striker you have to look after yourself, and there's no doubt he looks after himself - and a little bit more.

"It was a deliberate stamp and to be honest it looked like he stamped again in the second half ... I think it should have been a red."
