'It's something very much new to the game of hurling' Seamus Harnedy on Waterford system

Cork forward Seamus Harnedy says Waterford's much-talked about defensive system means the Rebels will need to be smarter with their decision-making.

Speaking to Newstalk's Oisin Langan ahead of today's Munster championship clash against the Deise - Cork's conquerors in the Allianz Hurling League final - he said: "I suppose it's something that is very much new to the game of hurling. It's something that I haven't come across too many times previously. It is a very effective system as shown before but you just have to be more wise with the ball. It has to be a lot cuter and you have to draw them out a bit more. But obviously throughout the league, they're showing themselves as real title contenders now."

Harnedy, who says up to seven or eight sides can consider themselves true All-Ireland contenders, also admitted that Cork need to be more consistent in games than they have been of late.

"I think maybe the problem at times is that we zoned out in games. We've always had a patch where when we've had a bad patch, we've had a bad patch. We just need to be a little bit more consistent throughout our game. We seem to be outstanding for 55 minutes and we could just drop the intensity for 10-15 minutes and you can't afford to do that at any stage. At least we're aware of it now and we can work on it."

Harnedy was speaking att a Liberty Insurance safe drivers launch. Off The Ball will have updates from the Cork v Waterford match today with Oisin Langan, and also Brian Hogan on analysis.
