"McCann shouldn't be hung up on the cross" - Ray Silke on possible eight-week ban

Tyrone’s Tiernan McCann took a theatrical fall after Monaghan’s Darren Hughes ruffled his hair in the sides Football Championships quarter final on Saturday.

The red hand may have won the game, but it could be McCann’s last of the Championship as the GAA’s Central Competition Controls Committee is proposing an eight week suspension for McCann.

According to The Sun, Tyrone may oppose the punishment.

Ray Silke spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime today about the proposed ban and stated that: "Tiernan McCann... isn't the first and I doubt he will be the last.

"I think the GAA most definitely need to look at it but is it appropriate in this situation? I would feel it is probably a little bit severe by virtue of the fact that we have seen cases of diving in the Championship and there hasn't been action taken.

"I do think something needs to change, maybe a rule change... it's totally the wrong message you're trying to get out there. Surely it's the direct opposite of what sport should be about, which is about integrity and decency.

"I think everyone was horrified by McCann's actions, it was just totally over the top."

He continued: "You don't want to make a bad case leading to poor law.

"McCann shouldn't be hung up on the cross on this particular occasion and I think the GAA have to be careful."
