Jack Pitt-Brooke on West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: "It's kind of amazing that he's still there"

Jack Pitt-Brooke joined Monday's Off the Ball to discuss the current situation at West Ham on The Football Show.

The Hammers are currently in the relegation zone having lost four of their six games so far this season.

They lost 3-2 at home to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur last weekend and speaking to Joe Molloy about West Ham's manager Slaven Bilic, Pitt-Brooke said: "It's kind of amazing that he's still there. Clearly David Sullivan has decided that he's not the long term man for the job.

"They started talking to other managers towards the end of last season - they spoke to David Wagner, they spoke to Marco Silva, so eventually they didn't pull the trigger hastily because Sullivan didn't want to pay-off Bilic and his staff because it could cost them the best part of three and a half million pounds.

"So we are left in this strange position, a little bit like Sam Allardyce was in his last season where everyone knows that the manager is going to go but Sullivan can't find anyone to replace him so he's still in the position of seeing out his contract.

"It's not the thing that would happen at any other club, I don't think," he added.

Asked about his tactical approach, Pitt-Brooke said: "In a sense it's not that different to what happened with Croatia, like Bilic is such a great guy. Anyone who has spent any time with him knows he's a very interesting and clever, he's charismatic - he can persuade the players of things and that motivational power does get you quite far - like it did with Croatia when he took that job.

"But I think his first season at West Ham was a perfect example particularly given the fact that it was the last season at Upton Park - he did have a real grip over the players and it worked really well and he got them to play above themselves.

"But again, that kind of thing doesn't last forever."
