James Horan assesses pros and cons of Roscommon vacancy

With John Evans having stepped down as Roscommon manager, it leaves an inter-county vacancy for prospective candidates to vie for.

Former Mayo manager James Horan was on Off The Ball and assessed what the pros and cons for those who will go for the position.

"If you look at the form guide and the underage structures - the four U21s in a row and we know they have some very good players like the Murtaghs and Smiths - so from that point of view it should be an enticing job.

"John Evans has brought them from Division 3 to Division 1 back-to-back, won a Connacht FBD League and has done very well, so you'd think the direction is the right way.

"But it's a really tricky one because you go into Roscommon now, they're in Division 1, it's probable or likely that they could be relegated from that because Division 1 is dog territory, it really is. They haven't been there, so they might find that tough.

"That can bring stresses and strains to a young team that are trying to make it - that straight away they go down and confidence goes with that.

"And then you have Mayo coming back strong again, so there's that element of it.

"But it certainly would be a good challenge. I think the framework there is pretty strong from the underage structures so I'm sure there will be plenty of people lining up to have a crack at that one.

James was speaking on Off The Ball as he does every Thursday night.
