Jamie Carragher: Tottenham would likely be champions if Chelsea were in Europe

Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher thinks the Premier League title would be Tottenham's had Chelsea played European football this season.

Chelsea have a four point lead over their rivals with four games left to play after both sides secured wins in key games at the weekend.

The Blues beat Everton 3-0 away, while Tottenham overcame Arsenal 2-0 in the North London derby at White Hart Lane.

Chelsea have only had domestic competitions to focus on this season, whereas Spurs played in the Champions League group stages in the Autumn and winter, and then the Europa League last 32 where they were knocked out by Genk.

Carragher told Sky Sports News that the difference in fixture commitments made a difference which favoured Chelsea.

"If Chelsea had been in Europe I think there's a great chance we could be saying with four games to go that this could be Tottenham's first title since 1961. That's how good they are," he said.

"If they had played more games, Chelsea, they probably would have had a few more injuries and couldn't maybe play the same team week in week out and I think they may have just done it."

This season was the first campaign since 1996-97 that Chelsea were not involved in European competition.
