Jamie Heaslip: "Take Sonny Bill, I doubt he meant to go in and smash him in the head but that's what happened"

Former Lions number 8 Jamie Heaslip believes Sonny Bill Williams didn't mean to hit Anthony Watson high at the weekend but given the speed the game is played at - it is almost impossible to cut out those errors.

The major talking point from the match was the red card received by Williams midway through the first half.

Referee Jerome Garces had little hesitation brandishing a red despite the reluctance of his touch-judges to back his decision

Healsip joined Saturday's Off the Ball to discuss the Lions epic second test win in Wellington earlier that day.

"No-one goes out there to make mistakes," he said, adding: "Let's just get that straight. We're human, everyone's human. We all make mistakes, we all mess up. Sometimes that emotional side really kicks in - and you just see an opportunity and you want to light someone up.

"Sometimes you slip, you make a mistake or you just make a bad judgement call. Take Sonny Bill, I doubt he meant to go in and smash him in the head but that's what happened. I think Conor got done for a high tackle for example - it's not like he meant to take him by the head but these things kind of happen.

"But, there is a lot of mistakes you can cut out and some of the penalties that were given away, the lads will know themselves, they were mistakes that could have been very easily cut out. And, a lot of that stems from how you practice, how you train and not letting that emotional side (take control) - some players, that's how they play drive, they drive on emotion," he added.

Heaslip also went on to discuss the Lions ability to play against 14 men and how they reaped the rewards of attacking space.
