John Giles: Rivals will improve next season, but don't expect Chelsea to sit on their laurels

It's an important summer for Manchester United with a view to next season.

I think depending on the signings they make in the close season, I think they can improve. But then again, Chelsea can make signings during the close season and they can improve as well.

So Man United have a bit to catch up. It's been a long season for them and there have been lots of changes.

As we saw at the start of the season, Louis van Gaal was committed to the three at the back. He really believed in that. But the fact is they are not playing three at the back now and have not played it for a few weeks.

I think they are better off without it. I think that has been a waste of time to get to the point where he is playing his best team, which happened around the time they played Liverpool.

It is much better than it was before because they have got a balance to the team. But that's not great tactics.

Chelsea are the team to catch at the moment and it depends what signings Manchester United make or Manchester City make - or Arsenal for that matter. But Chelsea can also make a couple of signings and stay ahead of the pack.

I have not seen a team yet who could not improve and Chelsea can definitely improve. I saw them against QPR the previous week and they were not all the great.

Once the season is finished, every manager wants to improve the team and you have to look at Alex Ferguson. How many times did he improve his Manchester United team when they were winning nearly every year?

You're never perfect. You will never make a team perfect so if you have the resources to do it, in Jose Mourinho's mind he knows exactly who he wants and where he wants to improve the team because you never sit on your laurels."
