John Giles: "Van Gaal confuses me" and pressure immediately on Martial

John Giles has described Manchester United's transfer business this summer as "chaotic".

Speaking on Off The Ball tonight, he said that manager Louis van Gaal baffles him at times with his public utterances.

"Van Gaal confuses me. Sometimes I hear him and he's very good and sometimes I'd hear him like after the match [against Swansea] where 'we dominated the game' and I'm thinking, 'that's not the same game that I've been watching,'" he said, adding that United lack midfielders who are equipped to get past their opposing marker.

With Man United spending vast sums on unproven young striker Anthony Martial, John feels the pressure on the player is immediate and also questions the timing of the club's dealing in the market.

"In Ferguson's case, he had his transfer business done every year as soon as the season is finished. Now we're getting to the last few hours of the transfer window before Manchester United are making a move or apparently making a move. So this lad (Martial) has to be good because he's expected to do his stuff straight away because all the strikers are gone. Rooney is really the only striker that they have at the moment. So this lad will have to be good," said John, who added that if he was manager he would play Maroune Fellaini up front as a centre forward for Rooney to play off.
